Regular readers of the blog will probably know how much I love the Family Drama genre of Japanese Cinema due to the slow-burning nature of the storytelling and the minimal cinematography. It won't come as a surprise that this love extends to a television series, and Hirayasumi embodies everything you would expect from a top-tier slice of life that Japan has to offer.

Evangelion Film series (remake)

Genre: Sci-Fi Anime, Mecha, Psychological Drama

The Rebuild of Evangelion cinematic tetralogy (1.0 You Are (Not) Alone, 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance, 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo, and 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time) reimagines Hideaki Anno’s legendary mecha anime masterpiece. Fourteen-year-old Shinji Ikari is drafted by his estranged father to pilot Evangelion Unit-01, a bio-mechanical giant built by NERV to defend a post-apocalyptic Tokyo-3 against destructive cosmic entities called Angels. As of writing this post - You have exactly 9 days until the entire remake series leaves Prime which is kind of insane to think about as its been on the platform since its release and was heavily marketed as one of Prime's showcase offerings.

Nippon Sangoku (2026)

Genre: Post-Apocalyptic Political Thriller, Tactical Warfare, Military Anime

Set in a dystopian future where nuclear fallout and economic collapse have shattered modern civilization, Japan has devolved into a bloody historical throwback divided into three warring factions: Yamato, Izumo, and Musashi. Nippon Sangoku follows Teruaki Aoboshi, an exceptionally intelligent former low-ranking bureaucrat from Yamato. Armed with strategic brilliance, oratorical persuasion, and historical insight, Teruaki embarks on a calculated campaign to outmaneuver warlords, unify the three fractured kingdoms, and rebuild a prosperous nation from the ashes of civil war.

One of the standout anime series of 2026, which doesnt say much to be honest, but Nippon Sangoku is refreshingly original and animated in a gorgeously unique way that will definitely ensure it has longevity which alot of these other shows lack.
