Netflix Japan has just announced a slate of new originals set to release this year. These include a mix of genres — drama series, feature film, unscripted show, and anime — showcasing the variety of content Netflix is releasing for global audiences.
Over the past few years, Netflix Japan has treated us exceptionally well, and it looks like this trend will continue in 2026. Let's look forward to another amazing year filled with abundant content!
Here are brief descriptions of the four Netflix titles announced for 2026:
Kenka Dokugaku (喧嘩独学)
A live-action drama series adapted from a hugely popular Korean webtoon. It follows a high-school student, Kōta Shimura, who is at the bottom of the school hierarchy, struggling with poverty and his sick mother. After a fight he has goes viral online, he starts a live-streamed fighting channel to earn money and challenge the unfairness in his world — turning his life into a raw, action-filled coming-of-age journey.
2. Yomei Ichinen, Otoko o Kau (余命一年、男をかう)
A feature film about Yui Katakura, a 40-year-old woman who has lived frugally and independently. When she’s told she has only one year left to live, she decides to break free from her old habits. In an unconventional twist, she literally “buys” a troubled host named Sena for ¥720,000, and a quirky, unpredictable connection forms between them. The story is described as a unique love story that explores life, death, and human connection.
3. Black Auction — Kindan no Nyusatsu (ブラックオークション〜禁断の入札〜)
An unscripted (reality/variety) show hosted and fronted by Matsuko Deluxe. It centres around a secret members-only auction in a mysterious underground setting where unusual and intriguing items are put up for bid. The show promises a mix of curiosity, exclusivity, and personality-driven entertainment.
4. 20th Century Electric Catalogue – Eureka Everica (二十世紀電氣目録-ユーレカ・エヴリカ-)
A new anime series from Kyoto Animation, set in an alternate early 20th-century Japan where steam power developed instead of electricity. The story follows a boy grieving his brother — who once dreamed of an electric era — and a devout girl with her own hopes and regrets. Their lives intertwine as they uncover the secrets of the mysterious “Electric Catalogue,” leading to an emotional tale about dreams, loss, and renewal.
