If you're a fan of Hirokazu Kore-eda, you're probably already buzzing with excitement about his latest project. I know I am! The master filmmaker behind masterpieces like Shoplifters and Nobody Knows is currently in production on a new film, and it sounds like everything a Kore-eda fan could hope for.
Titled "Sheep in the Box", this new film is a sci-fi family drama set in the near future. The story, which Kore-eda says was inspired by The Little Prince, follows a couple who bring a state-of-the-art humanoid into their home to be their son. As soon as I heard that, I knew this would be a must-see. Kore-eda's genius lies in his ability to find the profound humanity in unconventional family structures, and this premise seems like the perfect canvas for him to explore that theme in a new way.
It's also thrilling to see him reunite with actress Haruka Ayase from Our Little Sister, and to see him cast comedian Daigo in his first leading role. The director has a knack for getting incredible performances from his actors, and I can't wait to see what this cast brings to the screen. According to Kore-eda himself, the film came from the idea of "bringing the dead back to life using the latest technology," and he's interested in the conflict between technological progress and human values. I can't think of a better director to handle such a sensitive and thought-provoking topic.
I also wonder how much his partnership with Apple on the short film "Last Scene" impacted the setting choice for this project. "Last Scene" features a futuristic aspect as well, incorporating time travel and a humanoid robot portrayed by none other than Lily Franky!
"Sheep in the Box" is expected to be released in Japan in 2026. Until then, I'll be re-watching his classics and counting down the days until we get to experience what is sure to be another stunning and emotional film from one of the greatest directors working today.
