F1 the movie
F1 the movie

I know what you're thinking. He doesn't usually write about non-East Asian cinema, right? Well, like many others, I'm a sucker for summer blockbusters and couldn't pass up the chance to see "F1" in stunning IMAX.

Now that we've cleared that up, let's discuss Brad Pitt's latest movie. The film "F1" (also known as "F1 the Movie") is a sports drama set in the world of Formula 1 racing. Brad Pitt stars as Sonny Hayes, a former F1 prodigy whose career was abruptly ended by a severe crash in the 1990s. Thirty years later, he's a wandering racer-for-hire until his former teammate, now struggling F1 team owner Ruben Cervantes (Javier Bardem), persuades him to return to the sport.

Sonny's goal is to help rescue the fictional APXGP team from collapse and mentor their talented but undisciplined rookie driver, Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris). The film follows their journey through the intense world of F1, facing fierce rivals and internal team dynamics. It delves into themes of redemption, mentorship, and the challenging realm of professional motorsport.

Notably, the film was shot during actual F1 Grand Prix weekends, with the fictional APXGP team seamlessly integrated into the real F1 setting, including dedicated pit garages. Real-life F1 drivers like Lewis Hamilton (who also serves as a producer), Max Verstappen, and Charles Leclerc make cameo appearances, enhancing the film's authenticity.

Brad Pitt is undoubtedly the standout of this movie. He carries the film with his charismatic portrayal of Sonny, a troubled driver with numerous personal issues. I appreciated the contrast with Damson Idris's character, but it never truly reached a show-stopping level for me.

If you're going to watch this film, make sure it's on IMAX, as it beautifully captures the excitement of the film, which is ultimately F1's greatest asset. No one expects Oscar-level performances or narrative, but "F1" is a fantastic summer blockbuster for all fans, even those with no interest in the sport.

Also, I can't believe Brad's in his 60s, man.
